Fixed Vertical Bar Grill
The most basic and economical option. Equally spaced vertical bars welded into a frame. This is the right choice for back windows, utility areas, commercial shutters or anywhere design is not the primary concern.
Designer Pattern Grill
Geometric, floral, jali or custom artwork patterns fabricated by hand welding or CNC laser cutting. Square grids, diamond patterns, floral scrollwork, chevron designs — the range is extensive. For living room windows, entrance balconies and facade-facing openings, a designer grill transforms the exterior look of a flat or bungalow.
More complex patterns take longer to fabricate and cost more, but the visual impact per rupee spent is high compared to most other home improvement investments.
Anti-Climb Grill
Standard vertical bar grills can be climbed by anyone with physical ability and determination. Anti-climb grills incorporate inward-facing angled bars, curved outward spikes or closely spaced horizontal elements that make gaining a foothold impossible. For ground-floor properties in isolated areas or compound boundary grills, anti-climb design is the appropriate specification.
Casement / Openable Grill
A fixed grill with a hinged and lockable section that can be opened from inside in an emergency. As Maharashtra's fire safety regulations become more stringent — and as housing societies increasingly require compliance documentation — casement grills are becoming the default specification for residential buildings.
If your building is above 4 floors or is going through a fire NOC renewal process, installing fully fixed grills may create compliance issues. Mosquito Mesh + Grill Combination
An SS wire mesh panel integrated within the grill frame, providing both security and insect filtration. Increasingly requested in Thane, Mumbra and Kalyan where mosquito density is higher, especially during and after monsoon. The mesh needs occasional cleaning to remain effective, but the security function is unaffected even if the mesh needs replacement.
SS vs MS Grills — The Right Material for Mumbai
Stainless Steel Grills (SS 304)
SS 304 grills require essentially no maintenance in Mumbai's climate. Mumbai's humidity, monsoon rain and coastal air — none of these affect SS 304. The surface does not rust, stain or discolour. For windows with direct rain exposure, sea-facing openings or any outdoor balcony, SS 304 is the correct and long-term choice.
The upfront cost is higher than MS, but over a 15-year horizon it is almost always the more economical choice when maintenance is factored in.
Mild Steel Grills with Powder Coating
For interior windows, fully sheltered balconies or upper-floor areas where rain does not directly hit the grill, powder-coated MS is a cost-effective option. A quality powder coat on interior MS grills lasts 7–10 years without visible deterioration.
For any grill with direct outdoor rain exposure in Mumbai, MS will begin showing rust at weld joints and cut edges within 2–4 years. This is not a quality issue — it is a material limitation in this climate.

SS 304 window grill: ₹350–₹700 per sq ft. Simple vertical bar grills sit at the lower end; intricate laser-cut or custom pattern grills reach the higher end.
MS powder-coated grill: ₹150–₹350 per sq ft for standard designs. Designer MS grills: ₹250–₹450 per sq ft.
A typical 4ft × 4ft window is 16 sq ft. In SS 304 that works out to approximately ₹5,600–₹11,200 per window; in MS approximately ₹2,400–₹5,600. The difference is real but consider that SS requires zero maintenance over its lifetime while MS outdoors will need re-coating 2–3 times in the same period.
Choosing the Right Design — Practical Guidance
Match the grill design to the architectural language of your home. A minimalist modern apartment looks best with clean square grids or simple vertical bars — ideally in matte black or natural SS finish. A traditional bungalow or heritage-influenced building suits scroll patterns and curved elements better.
Bar spacing is both a design and safety parameter. For child safety on balconies and accessible windows, vertical bar spacing should not exceed 100mm (approximately 4 inches). This prevents a child's head from passing through — a standard followed in UK and European building codes and increasingly adopted by reputable fabricators in India.
Colour choice has long-term implications. Matte black powder coat is the most versatile choice — it coordinates with most exteriors, hides surface dust between cleanings and ages gracefully. White grills look striking when fresh but require frequent cleaning in Mumbai's dusty environment to maintain their appearance. Silver or natural SS finish is timeless and never looks dated.
